Congratulations to Steve Avant who was honored with the "Will Woodham Business Person of the Year Award for 2011" at the Chamber Banquet last night! You have certainly made an impact on Hartsville downtown and it's people. We salute you!

TGIF! The Women's League of Hartsville's 25th Annual Auction is a little over two weeks away, so make plans to stop by Lulu's, Minnie's or Burry Bookstore to buy tickets. The auction is at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, and will benefit Carolina Kids and the Hartsville Downtown Development Association. Tickets are $40 per person or $25 for League members.

Black Creek Arts Council is now offering Knitting and Crocheting classes. "Crocheting 101", taught by Melissa McCoy, will be offered on Tuesdays, January 31 through February 21. "Knitting 101", taught by Casey Gainey, will be offered on Thursdays, February 2-23.
Both classes will begin at 6:30 and end at 7:30pm. In just four weeks, you will learn basic stitches, how to read a pattern, and create beautiful projects. The cost of each class is $40 and includes yarn and needles to complete your first projects. Please sign up for class by January 25 by calling the Black Creek Arts Center, 843.332.6234.

Starting on January 31, Adrian Rhodes will begin a five week adventure in "Relief Printing" at the Black Creek Arts Center in Hartsville. Relief printmaking is a fun way to hand create images in multiple. It's great for cards, gifts, and more! Small blocks can be used as stamps, while larger pieces can create detailed works of original art. You cut away all parts of the image which you want to remain white, leaving the relief to pick up ink and spread your vision. In this class, you will learn how to transfer your drawing onto a linoleum block, carve your relief, and start printing. The cost of the class is $75 plus your materials. Sign up by calling the Allison Pederson at the Black Creek Arts Center (843.332.6234) by January 25.

HARTSVILLE – The city has rescheduled its free screening of “Gulliver’s Travels” for this Saturday, July 16^th, 2011 at 8:35pm. The film, which was originally intended to be shown last Saturday evening in Burry Park, was canceled due to inclement weather. The city organizers have since created a contingency plan and rain policy for the rest of the summer. In case of rain, Screen on the Green will be moved to the Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center at Byerly Park and shown that same night. In the event of a more severe weather warning, the call to cancel the showing will be made the same day no sooner than three hours before sunset. Yard signs will be posted at entrances to Burry Park, and on the main intersections in Downtown Hartsville, to notify viewers that the showing has been moved or canceled.

Each Screen on the Green movie presentation is projected on a 25-foot screen and sponsored by a community partner, organization, businesses or individual. “Gulliver’s Travels” is sponsored by Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home and the Hartsville Downtown Development Association. Free Paper Shred and E-waste reCycling Day

The City of Hartsville in conjunction with the Hartsville Downtown Development Association will have a free paper shred and e-waste recycling event, Saturday, August 6^th, 2011, 9am to 1pm at the Good Living Marketplace on Cargill Way. SPC Credit Union will be sponsoring a mobile shredding truck. Residents are encouraged to bring any office paper documents, stapled or unstapled, for disposal. City employees will also be on hand to collect unwanted or nonworking electronic devices that have a cord. Large appliances, refrigerators, air conditioners, or any other device that uses Freon, will not be accepted for recycling.
